Let me start this out by saying I LOVE THANKSGIVING. It is my favorite holiday by far, I love spending time with my family, I love the food, I love the drinks. What I have started to dislike about this holiday is that people are more excited about the following morning and waiting in line to trample each other for a crazy discount on some knick knack. Sure the prospect of saving a bunch of money on a material possession that you don't really NEED could be exciting, but isn't the whole point of the holidays really to make memories with people that you love? REI, a outdoor goods co-op and retailer coined a movement last year with #Optoutside . They wanted to inspire their customers to spend Black Friday outside, hoping to put a memory or an experience above the material goods associated with the day after Thanksgiving. So here are a few reasons why I'm choosing to #OptOutside
1. If you are going to be up before the sun you should watch the sunrise from a beautiful spot.
I have spent Black Friday morning waiting in line before, and the sun comes up and you get a magnificent view of the Target parking lot... wouldn't you rather be taking in that moment on top of a mountain? I would.
2. Money spent on experiences is worth more than money spent on "things"
$600 on a new TV? or $200 on a couple tanks of gas and an adventure? The choice is clear to me.
3. It's a chance to spend real quality time with your family and friends
The real purpose of the holidays is to spend time with your family and friends, if you can share a memory outdoors with each other it will be something you can always look back at fondly, or even create a new tradition!
4. I feel bad for the people that have to work on Black Friday
It is not hard to feel bad for the people working the retail stores on Black Friday, people are jerks, people literally fight each other for things that they are trying to buy, I do not want to be another reason that those workers hate the day they work, so I am going to separate myself from the whole situation.
5. Left over turkey sandwiches taste better outdoors
